What is the FCC GROL License Certification?
A General Radiotele phone Operator License (PG), usually just referred to as the GROL, is required to maintain, adjust or internally repair radiotelephone transmitters that are FCC-licensed in the maritime, aviation, and international fixed public radio services.
There are several commercial radio operator permits and licenses issued by the FCC, but the General Radiotelephone credential is by far the most popular – accounting for more than 80% of all radio operator licenses issued by the Commission.
The FCC GROL is an important credential that solidifies your knowledge and skill in the realm of aviation, marine, and land mobile communications. This license is a key qualification that you will need if you are an aviation and marine electronics technician, Captain of a small ship, or a tech repairing and maintaining aircraft, ship, and land-based radio equipment or marine RADARs.

GROL Credential Benefits - Better Pay & Prospects
Aircraft and communications systems today are becoming increasingly complex; and that presents an opportunity for you to make yourself an attractive prospect for future employers.
Here are 3 reasons we think an aviation technician should consider getting their GROL:
Universal License for Avionic and Radio Maintenance Techs in Aviation
There are several certificates and licenses available to avionic techs or electrical techs, such as those administered by the Electronics Technician Association- International association.
Many employers will accept some as a valid credential, but the one license that is commonly accepted and widely respected is the GROL. If you’re an avionic or electrical technician, look on Glassdoor or Indeed and check some of the requirements for “must have” certifications. Most of the time you’ll see the General Radiotelephone permit as one of the certifications accepted by employers, and often it’s listed as the only one!
Looks great on your resume
Your resume is the first impression a prospective employer will have of you. It pays to strengthen your resume and provides more value to the employer by separating yourself from other candidates.
If you are an A&P with knowledge of basic electronics and radio telephone fundamentals, you instantly become more employable in the civilian aviation world (as well as many other industries.) Gaining an Airframe & Powerplant license is a great achievement, but adding the FCC GROL certification can make all the difference.
Better paid jobs
According to a recent review by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the yearly salary for avionic techs in the aerospace industry averages around $64,000. According to the report, the top 10% of avionic technicians can earn around $94,000.
The need for technicians with modern aviation skills is increasing with the continued advancement in technology; so, completing a license accreditation like GROL will be immediately important to increase your earnings.
